DICTATIONS

Choreographer and Director Mele Broomes is seeking a Producer and further support for her new theatre work in development, titled Dictations.

Intro to the work

Dictations (work in development)

Dictations is a multidisciplinary performance, artistically directed by Mele Broomes, that weaves together live music, dance, and spoken word. Featuring an ensemble of 10 performers, including a live musicans, singers, and rappers, the work delivers personal reflections and messages to loved ones.

At its core, Dictations explores the duality of control and surrender—how much of our lives we can dictate, and how much is shaped by forces beyond our control. The performance reflects on love, sacrifice, and the legacies of our relationships. The messages honor the choices, mistakes, and journeys of those who came before us, acknowledging how their experiences have shaped the voices we have today—voices that continue to influence our paths.

While life’s challenges often feel beyond our control, there is power in the choices we make and in the love and spirit of those who inspire us. Dictations is both a celebration and a reclamation of the space we carve to pursue our dreams and aspirations. The performance invites the audience to recognise the beauty in both the struggles and triumphs that define our lives.

The work is conceived and Directed by Mele Broomes working in creative collaboration with Kemono Lebe Riot as assistant director. There have been development periods support from National Theatre of Scotland. The team is now looking to undertake a final development period (dramaturge; script writing; choreography and music development; costume and lighting design) and working towards it’s premier Glasgow in 2026.

Following the premier, they plan to make an application to Made In Scotland Showcase to support a Scottish tour (but we are open to alternative suggestions and direction from interested producers).
